Understanding Cash Flow Statements

Understanding Cash Flow Statements When it comes to understanding business finances, the ability to read different financial statements becomes crucial. A cash flow statement is an important and essential part of keeping a record of the business’ financial liquidity. Business’ liquidity matters because it often directly signals the company’s ability to pay off debts and to generate money â€" problems in either can have devastating consequences in terms of business’ long-term survival. © Shutterstock.com | ScandinavianStockIn this guide, you’ll learn to understand the 1) definition of a cash flow statement, with its benefits and disadvantages. The guide will also look at the 2) structure of a financial statement and the 3) different preparation methods you can use to calculate a company’s cash flow.WHAT IS A CASH FLOW STATEMENT?Cash flow statement is one of the core three financial reporting tools companies use. It is designed to complement the balance sheet and the income statement. In most accounting systems around the world, a cash flow statement is part of the mandatory reporting.A cash flow statement is an official record of cash and cash equivalents entering and leaving a business entity. It focuses on showcasing the sources of money in the business as well as how it is spent over a specific period. It usually looks at the general accounting period, such as a financial year, but cash flow statements can be created over any specific period. It is important to note that a cash flow statement doesn’t necessarily include  non-cash items. The statement is similar to the income statement, as a statement to record a business’ financial performance, yet the exclusion of these non-cash items makes it different from the income statement. The cash flow statement is therefore in essence a way to see how much actual cash the company is generating and spending.Who uses and needs a cash flow statement? As mentioned above, a cash flow statement is part of the mandatory accounting reporting in most countries for a business entity. Whether the entity is a corporation, a public company or a sole proprietorship, a cash flow statement will be part of the accounting standards. There are some differences as to who gets to view a company’s financial statements, such as a cash flow statement. Publicly traded companies are required to make statements, such as the cash flow statement, available for the public. But other smaller companies often don’t need to provide a public report, yet must have one in their own records.People and groups that can benefit from viewing a cash flow statement include:The entity’s ownersThe entity’s accounting personnelPotential lenders or creditorsPotential investorsPotential employees or other contractorsShareholders of the businessAll of the above have their own reasons for benefitting from the cash flow statement. The above list simply shows a cash flow statement is widely used and an important part of a company’s financial reporting. While a cash flow statement often looks at a single year, many companies also produce quarterly cash flow statements. These could be very helpful, especially for entrepreneurs who have just started out or entities trying to get out of financial trouble. The benefits and disadvantages of a cash flow statementBefore we look at the structure of a cash flow statement in more detail, it is important to understand why a cash flow statement is essential for a business. Fur thermore, you should understand the limitations of a cash flow statement to ensure you don’t use the statement the wrong way.The biggest advantage of a cash flow statement is its ability to show the company’s short-term viability in terms of its cash position. This allows the company to see how much it has cash available to commit to repayments or investments, for instance. The cash flow statement is good at highlighting this cash liquidity in the company. This is something you cannot see from the profit and loss statement, for example. On the other hand, with a cash flow statement you can see how much money you have available for accounting the issues on your profit and loss statement. The second big advantage of a cash flow statement is its ability to make predictions. As you are able to see the company’s liquidity position, you are able to arrange the company’s finances to better respond to future issues. For example, if you can see your company’s liquidity is currently s trong and there are a few debt repayments in the long-term future, you can try to clear some of them with the current liquidity. Finally, a cash flow statement can benefit companies by attracting more investors to invest in the company. Investors don’t want to make decisions without fully understanding the financial position of the company, and so the more information you can provide for them the better. On the other hand, investors can also benefit greatly from a cash flow statement. It shows plenty of information about the company’s financial health and by comparing it with other financial statements, investors can see whether the finances are correct and up to date.In terms of disadvantages, it is important to understand that a cash flow statement only tells one side of the story. Since it only deals with cash, it cannot be used as a profit and loss statement. Therefore, to truly make the most of your cash flow statement, you need to use it together with other financial statemen ts. Together with statements like the balance sheet, you’ll get a more detailed look into the entity’s finances.THE BASIC STRUCTURE OF A CASH FLOW STATEMENTThe first thing to know about the cash flow statement is its division into three separate sections. A cash flow statement looks at three components of core operations, investing, and financing in order to come to the final conclusion. One of the major distinctions in a cash flow statement, compared to an income statement and a balance sheet, is the lack of reporting on future incoming and outgoing cash. Furthermore, some of the things you won’t know from a loss and profit statement, but which feature at the cash flow statement include:Owner’s draws out of the businessPayment of credit card principalPayment of loan principalA cash flow looks at only the movements in the three sectors during the determined period, not what is going to happen in the future. Therefore, the cash figure announced in the statement is not net inco me of the entity.Let’s now look at the three sections in more detail.OperationsThe operations section of the cash flow statement reflects the company’s cash generation from its products and services. It measures both the inflows and outflows of the core business operations. In a typical cash flow statement, the operations part involves incoming and outgoing amounts, or the changes to cash, accounts receivable, depreciation, inventory and accounts payable.Since cash flow doesn’t involve income from non-cash items, many of the above items need to be re-evaluated when generating a cash flow statement from the balance sheet. The example of depreciation illustrates the issue well. Since depreciation isn’t a cash expense, it is added back to the net profit when calculating operating cash flow.Furthermore, operating cashflow must reflect changes in accounts receivable. If the accounts receivable drops from one accounting period to the other, the change reflects an injection of cash t o the company. The injection will be reflected by calculating the decreased amount and adding it to net profit. On the other hand, if the accounts receivable sees an increase from one accounting period to the other, the increased amount needs to be deducted from net sales. While these are revenue, they are not cash.In terms of the inventory, an increasing inventory means the company has spent money. If the inventory was bought off with cash, the value is deducted from net profit. On the other hand, if the inventory sees a decrease the amount is added to net profit. Finally, any payable credit, taxes and salaries, for instance, will result in an increase in accounts payable and the increase from one period to another will be added to net profit. As a rule of thumb for these sorts of payments, you can consider that everything that has been paid off will be subtracted from net income.InvestingThe second part of a cash flow statements deals with the incoming and outgoing cash relating to i nvesting. This includes the changes in equipment, assets and other investments. In most instances, this section is cash leaving the company, since companies mostly use cash to buy new equipment and tools, for example. Businesses’ even invest in assets such as marketable securities. It is crucial to note that if a business entity divests an asset, the transaction will be accounted as incoming cash.FinancingThe third part of the statement deals with financing. It isn’t possible to start a company without some sort of financing and this section deals with both the money the owner has invested into the company, as well as the money they have borrowed to keep the company going. In short, this section includes incoming and outgoing cash changes in debt, loans and dividends. The items considered in this part of the statement can be both short- and long-term liabilities and equities. Therefore, some of the most common items in the section include:Interests paidDividends paidIssuance or pur chase of common stockIssuance or repayments of debtIf the company is raising capital, then the amount is calculated as cash coming into the business. On the other hand, if dividends are paid, the cash is considered to leave the company.Non-cash activitiesIt is also worth pointing out that while non-cash activities are not part of the cash flow statement, some non-cash activities must be mentioned as a footnote in the statement. These generally include any non-cash investing and financing activities. These might include the following non-cash financing activities:Leasing to purchase an asset for the businessConverting part of a debt to equityExchanging non-cash assets or liabilities for other such assets or liabilitiesIssuing shares in exchange for assetsAn example of a cash flow statementBelow is an example of a cash flow statement. You can see all the different sections and how the figures are calculated. As you can see, the bottom of the statement shows the total cash flow of the c ompany for the accounting period.Cash Flow StatementBusiness ABCFinancial Year ended 31 December 2014Figures in USDCash Flow from OperationsNet EarningsAdditions to CashDepreciationDecrease in Accounts ReceivableIncrease in Accounts ReceivableIncrease in Taxes PayableSubtractions from CashIncrease in InventoryNet Cash from Operations3,000,00025,00020,00015,0003,000(40,000)3,023,000Cash Flow from InvestingEquipment(450,000)Cash Flow from FinancingNotes payable15,000Cash Flow for Financial Year2,588,000The above example statement shows you the company’s total cash flow, as well as where majority of the liquidity came from.Naturally, not all cash flow statements show a positive cash flow. But it is important to remember that a negative cash flow doesn’t necessarily mean the business is failing. Sometimes a negative cash flow is part of a company’s decision to heavily invest in new inventory, for example, which might increase the cash flow the following year. Therefore, as mention ed, you need to use a cash flow statement as part of your financial analysis, but not rely solely on it.Overall, you also want to compare your cash flows from different periods. While a single negative cash flow statement might not signal trouble, if your cash flow is constantly on the negative, your business is clearly having liquidity problems. It usually means the business is having difficulties paying debt and relies too much on credit. You should also consider calculating the operating cash flow ratio based on your cash flow statement. This will help you understand the business entity’s ability to service its loans and interest payments. You can calculate the ratio by comparing the total amount of cash generated to the company’s total outstanding debt.DIFFERENCES IN PREPARATION METHODSThe above section dealt with the structure of the cash flow statements, but there are different ways of preparing the actual statement. The two most common methods include the direct and the in direct method. The difference between the two preparation methods deals only with the operations part of the cash flow statement. While there often aren’t any rules regarding which method companies should use, the direct method is often suggested as the better option.Direct methodAs mentioned, the direct method is often the recommended preparation style. It is also referred to as the income statement method. The direct method separates the operating cash receipts and payments into major classes. It first outlines the money received and moves on to subtract any money spent. This provides the net cash flow. The direct method doesn’t include depreciation into its calculations. This is because, while being an expense that affects net profit, it is not money spent or received by the entity.Indirect methodThe indirect method is often called the reconciliation method. Unlike the direct method, it focuses on looking at the net income and net cash flow from operations. The method starts with net income and then adds back depreciation, while calculating changes in the balance sheet. In the end, the result is the same net cash flow produced by the direct method, the way it receives it just differs slightly. The reason indirect method adds depreciation into the mix is on the way the net cash flow is calculated. Since it starts with net profits, which doesn’t include depreciation as it is considered an expense, it wants to include it later. In our example above we used the indirect method. As mentioned already, regardless of the method the net cash flow from operations should be the same in both methods. It is possible to find readymade charts for both of these methods online. These charts can be a great help in getting to grips with your cash flow statements. For instance, the US Small Business Administration provides a free cash flow worksheet for business owners to use, and other such worksheet can be found elsewhere. You can also use the above example as a basis for you r cash flow statement. You can also find out more about the two different methods from the below YouTube video: CONCLUSIONFor a business entity, the use of a cash flow statement is a crucial part of predicting future liquidity. It is therefore, an essential part of budgeting and any business owner should regularly use an up-to-date statement as part of its financial planning strategy.A cash flow statement will reflect the entity’s financial health and therefore, it isn’t just crucial for business owners but for investors as well. While the statement tells a lot about the company’s cash flow, in terms of where the cash is coming from and where it is going, business owners and investors cannot see everything from the cash flow statement. In order to get a proper, wide-ranging look into the entity’s financial health, a cash flow statement should be used together with statements such as a balance sheet and an income statement.

The same group of students was required to compare their online submission perception with another assignment submission, which was a paper-based assignment. Students were asked to compare the quality of the submission process based on ease of compilation (Bridge Appleyard, 2005). The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins - 1441 Words

The Hunger Games is a novel by Suzanne Collins about a lower class girl who finds herself suddenly surrounded by a striking upper class lifestyle. Growing up in District 12, it was very hard for Katniss Everdeen to picture life on the wealthier side. She lives in a country called Panem, which is divided into 12 districts. All 12 districts are controlled by one greater force, the Capitol. The Capitol is known for it’s lavish lifestyle and harsh methods of control. The Capitol controls the media, the schools, the food supply and most importantly, the people. Panem suffers from immense class differences, harsh body modifications, glorified spectacles of violence, and monstrous sponsorships. Life in Panem is a lot more similar to life in†¦show more content†¦The chance of her name being drawn is very slim compared to to those who live in the Seam. Not impossible, but slim. And even though the rules were set up by the Capitol, not the districts, certainly not Madge’ s family, it’s hard not to resent those who don’t have to sign up for the tesserae† (Collins 13). Each time a family runs out of necessities, they have two options, they can go without and try to make ends meet, or they can put their name in the drawing for the games another time. This is the tessera program. The tessera program is just one way that the government allows itself to keep the upper hand. With the division between the upper and lower class being so large, and the majority of the population being lower class, we can see how closely life in the districts relates to life in America today. According to pewresearch.org, the middle class makes up about 46% of the American population today. This leaves more than half of the population to be divided between the upper and lower classes. With the upper class making up less than 10% of the population, this means that around 44% of Americans are considered to be lower class citizens. Also, as gathered from pewre search.org, in 2010, the median wealth for upper class families was 6.2 times that of middle class families. By 2013, this number grew to 6.6. With such a high population of lower class

Analysis of Film Poster for “The Matrix” Free Essays

From a distance the first thing that would be noticed by a passing audience would be the title of the poster. It would catch the viewer’s eye with its striking green colouration and large bold font. Its central position in the poster would draw the audience’s attention and bring them closer so they can pick out the smaller information, which in turn would lead to the desire to see the film or not. We will write a custom essay sample on Analysis of Film Poster for â€Å"The Matrix† or any similar topic only for you Order Now The use of the upper case makes the title stand out from the rest of the poster and would act as the focal point of the advertisement. The type of font used in this case sharp and modern, would denote the genre of the movie, which again would influence the people and pick out a specific target audience. Director: The directors name on my poster is situated above the title, so presumably would be the next thing the viewer would focus upon. A famous, well-established director such as Spielberg would sell a film by reputation alone. Their previous films using various genre would appeal to a target audience that wouldn’t have normally seen the film. Their success widens the target audience and draws in people outside the specified genre, making more money for the producer’s etc. Images: Images are probably the most important element of most types of advertisement. The use of images gives a more interesting and less boring way of getting the same message across that text would. Also because people are more susceptible to images and remember them easier, designers use this to inform and sell films by incorporating pictures into the poster. The type of imagery used again highlights a target audience, using their likes and dislikes, to create a demand for the film and make them want to watch it. The fact that my only form of imagery is in text and the use of numbers was done purposely, as I chose to integrate the main theme of the film, which is computers and science fiction, by using what could be described as ‘computer language’. The mystery invoked by this type of imagery would entice viewers into watching the film to understand the relevance of it because they are only given small pieces of information. Also the fact that the images can only really be read from close proximity, would mean that people would have to move closer to see, meaning they have to study the poster harder, which would lead to more information being processed, meaning they will have a better understanding of the movie. Actors/Actresses: The actors and actresses are important in widening the target audience further, their past roles and performances in movies will influence people into viewing the film. Most designers would use the upper case letters to advertise the cast as it stands out and would be more noticeable, they would use a contrasting colour from the back ground and they would position the most famous star on the left of the poster as viewers read from left to right. In my poster Keanu Reeves is the first name to appear on the poster, as he is the most famous. It is important to select cast that will appeal to as wide a target audience as possible, with Reeves and Moss, it does just that. They are both younger actors that would appeal to both sexes with their looks and sexual allure. People relate to stars, they either want to be with them or want to be them. Laurence Fishbourne, however, would attract the older viewers, as he is an older more classical actor, people wouldn’t necessarily want to be him or be with him, they would more likely admire him for his acting ability. Critic’s Quote: The critic’s quote is a significant part in the layout of a film poster as it gives the reader a supposedly unbiast opinion of the film. The critic’s quote is filled with hyperbolic language and positive words that would make the movie out to be the best film ever. This would help sell the film as no one would want to see a movie that was given a bad review because people are influenced by success. In my quote I used upper case letters within the sentence because it adds to the hyperbole and it highlights the positive words in the quote. The fact that it is directly under the cast’s names was done so that they would read the quote after the cast and work their way down the poster, building an opinion about the film and its view-ability. Who actually gave the quote is important too, as their success as a movie magazine, newspaper etc, would promote the movie and would again target a specific audience, in my case using Empire magazine, a ‘movie buff’ type of person. Because the average consumer doesn’t really know much about movies, the fact that they are being told by an ‘expert’, will influence their decision to pay their money to see the film. Certificate: By putting an age limit on the film you pick out a certain target audience. With having such a certificate as 15 advertised on the poster, you appeal to a younger audience with a ‘disposable income’, mainly students and adults that don’t have families or money that is spoken for. A certificate is there to give the viewers a rough guess as to its violence content, the language used and to what sort of extent the film has sexually explicit scenes in it. Although by putting an age limit on the movie, it doesn’t stop younger or older audience attending. Producers: This element of the film poster can be both beneficial and detrimental to its success as a film poster. By using a producer’s quote you attract a target audience by association, people who have seen earlier films will make the connection with its success or with its failure. This is potentially where this piece of information can be harmful. If the viewers make the link with a prior films achievements, this can help with the advertised films selling capability. However, if people make a negative link with the previous film they are less likely to watch it, as they will be put off by the last films performance. Conclusion: Altogether I feel my poster works reasonably well, I think it uses most of the key elements that a film poster has to possess in order to inform and to sell the movie to the public. The colouration is eye catching and modern and I feel I incorporated the main theme and essential taster of the movie within it. However if I was to repeat the exercise again I would change, improve and add a few things. I would have more than one critic’s quote to broaden the target audience even further, this would be achieved by maybe having a well known newspaper write a review on it, making the film review be seen by a whole range of people, as more buy newspapers than movie magazines. To show the public of this movie’s success I would probably decide to have the awards, Oscars etc that the movie had won or been nominated for, as this would attract an audience that wouldn’t have normally bothered. The Ultimate Hate Crime Corrective Rape free essay sample

The Ultimate Hate Crime: Corrective Rape BY BrittanyM1324 Brittany Martin English 200 Professor Gane 21 March 2010 Throughout history, hate crimes have obliterated and destroyed the lives of people that have unknowingly committed acts of wrongdoing solely based upon the perception of certain hate filled individuals or organizations; whether it is based upon their sex, their color of skin, their religion, or their sexual preferences, they are unjustifiably hated for it. The deep routed anger cannot be easily identified by these traight forward isms (sexism, racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia); the pain and disgust that resides in these individuals that commit these hate crimes is far deeper then these simple phrases. However, Just because individuals are hated for specific identities dont mean that everyone in that community shares that common hatred; for example, there are millions of white men that look up to African Americans with respect (Barrack Obama). Many individuals all over the world that are open to expressing their sexual preferences, homosexuals, have become the target to these epulsive hate crimes that have become known as corrective rape, as stated in Andrew Sullivans Whats So Bad about Hate? and Annie Kellys article Raped and Killed for Being a Lesbian. We will write a custom essay sample on The Ultimate Hate Crime: Corrective Rape or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Why do people feel they have the right to decide what is right and what is wrong? What are the motives for this immense disgust with homosexuals? Although it seems very simple and straightforward: that men are bias to women because of their sex, African Americans have become the enemy to whites because of their color of skin, or straight men loath lesbians because of their sexual preferences, t is never that simple. There is hate that fears, and hate that merely feels contempt; there is hate that expressed power, and hate that comes from powerlessness; there is revenge, and there is hate that comes from envy. There is hate that was love, and hate that is a curious expression of love. There is hate of the other, and hate of something that reminds us too much of ourselves. There is the oppressors hate and the victims hate. There is hate that burns slowly and hate that fades. And there is hate that explodes and hate that never catches fire 0. Sullivan ndoubtedly explains that there are many different motives and driving forces for why people turn to hate rather than compassion. In many cases of homosexuality, Sullivan describes straight men and their obsession with their perception of what relationships should consist of. They often describe those they hate as diseased or sick, in need of a cure, which is very common for crimes against homosexuality 0. Although this is not the only reason for why these crimes are committed, it has become a dominant reason. The reason for why men do this is unlimited. In April in South Africa, a female football squad star was found in a creek in a Kwa Thema, Eudy Simelane. She had been gang raped and stabbed twenty five times in the face, chest, and legs. She was one of the first women that openly showed her sent shockwaves through Kwa Thema and many other lesbians in Kwa Therma have come forward and agreed that they too are victims of these corrective rapes that these gangs are doing. A video showed on Annie Kellys article, showed a young boy speak out very honestly and bluntly that he as well as many others thought that lesbians are gross and it is Just not the way he had said many times during the interview. He also said that although he wasnt a part of them he was proud that they were occurring, to set these women straight. The video showed a poverty- stricken dirt road and the young man speaking was wearing dirty and old clothes, which helps bring out the symbol for why these murders are occurring. The problem in South Africa is dominance and power. Men are dominant over women in many less fortunate countries; furthermore, in a country where the people dont have very uch, masculinity and power is a huge part of what keeps these men motivated and keeps them going.

7 Reasons to Enroll a Child in an Online Elementary School

7 Reasons to Enroll a Child in an Online Elementary School Every year, hundreds of parents pull their kids out of traditional schools and enroll them in virtual programs. How do online elementary schools benefit children and their families? Why are parents so eager to remove their kids from the system that has worked for decades? Here are some of the most common reasons: 1. An online school gives kids the freedom to work on developing their passions. Two decades ago, primary school children were given little no homework. Now, students often return from school with hours of worksheets, drills, and assignments to complete. Many parents complain that students aren’t given the opportunity to focus on their own talents: learning an instrument, experimenting with science, or mastering a sport. Parents of online students often find that students are able to complete their assignments faster when they don’t have the distraction of peers to hold them back. Many online students are able to finish their coursework in the early afternoon, leaving many hours for kids to develop their own passions. 2. Online schools allow kids to get away from bad situations. Difficult situations with bullying, bad teaching, or a questionable curriculum may make school a struggle. Parents certainly don’t want to teach their kids to run away from a bad situation. However, some parents find that enrolling their child in an online school can be good for both their learning and their emotional health. 3. Families are able to spend more time together after enrolling their kids in online school. Hours of class, after-school tutoring, and extracurricular activities are leaving many families with no time to spend together (aside from homework tantrums). Online schooling lets kids complete their studies and still spend quality time with their loved ones. 4. Many online schools help kids work at their own pace. One of the drawbacks of traditional classrooms is that teachers must design their instruction to meet the needs of the students in the center. If your child is struggling to understand a concept, he may be left behind. Likewise, if your child is unchallenged, he may have to sit bored and uninspired for hours while the rest of the class catches up. Not all online schools let students work at their own pace, but a growing number provide students with the flexibility to get extra help when they need it or move ahead when they don’t. 5. Online schools help students to develop independence. By their nature, online schools require students to develop the independence to work on their own and the responsibility to complete assignments by the deadline. Not all students are up for the challenge, but kids that develop these skills will be better prepared for completing further education and joining the workforce. 6. Online schools help students develop technology skills. Technology skills are essential in almost every field and there’s no way for students to learn online without developing at least some of these essential abilities. Online learners tend to become proficient with internet communication, learning management programs, word processors, and online conferencing. 7. Families have a greater educational choice when they are able to consider online schools. Many families feel like they are stuck with few educational options. There may be only a handful of public and private schools within driving distance (or, for rural families, there may only be a single school). Online schools open up an entirely new set of choices for concerned parents. Families can choose from state-run online schools, more independent virtual charter schools, and online private schools. There are schools designed for young actors, gifted learners, struggling students, and more. Not all schools will break the bank, either. Publicly-funded online schools allow students to learn without charge. They may even provide resources like laptop computers, learning supplies, and internet access.

INTRODUCTION from Edward Said's ' Orientalism' Essay

INTRODUCTION from Edward Said's ' Orientalism' - Essay Example The first one centers around the idea that the term ‘Orient’ refers not to the truth of the region, but rather to an idea that has been developed in the minds of Europeans. Although not based on actual truth, this concept is naturally present in the European culture in the form of academic and other social institutions, the established vocabulary, the imagery utilized and the colonial styles. Secondly, ‘the Orient’ has been established as the Other, allowing the Europeans to define themselves as a colonizing country against the inferior culture they had themselves defined. Finally, building off of the ideas proposed by Michel Foucault, these distinctions made between Orient and Occident as well as the vocabulary, imagery and other sanctioned discussion and instruction regarding it, has confined the Orient, making it impossible for Europeans to consider the Orient without finding it necessary to first actively combat these limitations on thought or action. His main argument in the introduction, however, is to prove that the means by which he goes about proving the above statements are valid and meaningful in this context. He first sets about to prove that there is no such thing as pure knowledge because â€Å"no one has ever devised a method for detaching the scholar from the circumstances of life, from the fact of his involvement (conscious or unconscious) with a class, a set of beliefs, a social position, or from the mere activity of being a member of a society.†2 Because the concept of Orientalism is such an ingrained concept in the minds of the Western world, Said argues that it is impossible for a Western writer, regardless of genre or intent, to approach the topic from the perspective of an individual without first coming upon the topic as a Westerner. One of the modern means of interpreting a text involves the process of Deconstruction, a

Population Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Population - Essay Example In spite of this transition the total population of the country in stage IV is found to be much higher. It will be interesting to understand each stages of growth i.e. stage I through stage IV for understanding how the population eventually stabilizes (World Population: Growth & Trends). This is the stage when birth rates and death rates are high and even then there is no population growth. High birth rate is due to high fertility rate or no use of contraceptives. Similarly, high death rate during the stage is attributable to the deaths occurring from the deadly diseases such as plague, cholera, typhoid as medical science was not developed enough to provide required protection. This is a preindustrial stage when living conditions are not favorable. Infant mortality goes down due to improved health conditions that in turn, bring down the death rate; however, the birth rates still remains high keeping the population growth rate at high levels. This is also known as the transitional stage and most of the developing world is found in this stage. The country develops economically and the people start using contraceptives that controls the birth rates significantly. Population growth rate in this stage falls down significantly. Most of the developed world and a few developing countries can be found here. From the equation above, it is amply clear that if the death rate equals birth rate, there will be no growth in population of the country. In other words, if the death rate declines, the birth rate must decline by the same rate for the population to achieve stabilization. With the advances in medical sciences; better nutrition, enhanced sanitation and clean water, the death rates have declined substantially in last several decades; however, the birth rates have not kept pace with the death rates resulting into positive population

Is Depression Genetic? An Experiment

Is Depression Genetic? An Experiment Research Plan Quantitated research is information collected and the production of data via statistics and numbers. The data is collected through questionnaires, surveys or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data. For example, calculating the number of people who suffer with depression, this research can provide a number of manifestations but cannot provide an explanation to why people are depressed (Skills you need, 2018). Primary research (field research) is inspected first hand by individuals via surveys, interviews and observations. Variables of such research should be considered when addressing the results in particular age groups, sex and number of participants within a survey. Secondary research (desk research) involves collection on existing research using primary research sources as a source of data to analyse. (Research Optimus, 2018) In order to complete the project brief a secondary research technique has been applied opposed to primary research due to the absence of ethics committee within the college. The research will include looking at journal articles, statistics, legitimate websites and newspaper articles with further reading. This will then allow analysis and evaluation of material in attempt to answer the essays question with an unprejudiced perspective. 23/02/2018 – 05/03/2018 Decided topic; begun research and finalised essay question with supervisor. 06/03/2018 23/03/2018 Continued research and analysed data. 24/03/2018   – 17/05/2018 Assembled information into essay format; final meeting with supervisor.   Review work, conclude and evaluate. 18/04/2018 Submit the assignment Table 1 Project timeline and Key activities The research will focus on six key areas: What is depression?Who’s more likely to suffer from depression? What is the genetic explanation for depression? What is the biochemical explanation for depression? What are the psychological explanations of depression? What are the sociological explanation of depression? Information contained within this essay will not be open to debate as statistics collected are the result of a worldwide research being high in validity and reliability. Moral judgement, assumptions and personal opinions is not suitable or necessary for the purpose of this essay.   This essay will include conflicting perspectives with the intention to enable the reader to form their own conclusion. Throughout this essay efforts will be made to assess the validity and reliability of the information available such as government statistics highlighted in reputable studies. Health and safety protocol will be followed during the process of researching and assembling the essay such as regular breaks to reduce eye strain and upper limb problems. Information will be referenced accurately ensuring plagiarism is avoided, whilst observing all ethical and legal obligations at all times. Introduction Depression is one of the most common and serious illness with devastating consequences in its most server form, it is estimated that more than 300 million people suffer with depression worldwide (WHO, 2017) Depression is the most common mental disorders within the UK and reports suggests that it’s hit a record high, increasing by nearly a third in the last four years. The total estimated number of people living with depression worldwide increased by 18.4% between 2005 and 2015 to 32 million according to the World Health Organisation (Families for depression Awareness, 2017). This has prompted urgent calls for the government to ensure better health provisions are put in place, with the need to look deeper into this phenomenon to enable an understanding of the disorder enabling them to overcome it. Research has shown that depression does run in families, which could potentially mean that depression is genetic (inherited condition) NHS (2013). However, families don’t just share genes they also experience similar environments. Depression is a common and serious mental disorder that negatively effects how we feel, how we act and how we think (American Psychiatric Association, 2018). Depression is classified as a mood disorder that has an impact on both physical and mental health, affecting a large portion of the UK population with around 3 in 100 adults suffering every year (Mind Org, 2013). An episode of depression serious enough to require treatments occurs more commonly in 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men at some stage in their lives (Kalat, 2001). This could just be due to the fact women are more open to express their concerns and feeling then men are or that women are more willing/ likely to seek treatment. To meet the criteria for having depression the sufferer needs to display at least 5 symptoms that are laid out by the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and statistical Manual of mental health disorders, 2013). World Health Organisation WHO (2001), marks depression as when â€Å"capacity for enjoyment, interest, reduced concentration and marked tiredness after even minimum effort is common. The core symptoms of depression would entail persistent sadness or low moods, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, disturbed sleep or tiredness, change in appetite, feeling worthless or in server cases recurrent thoughts of death, excessive feelings of guilt and hopelessness (NHS, 2016). It’s also common for people with depression to develop physical symptoms such as headaches, palpitations, chest pains and hallucinations these are called psychotic symptoms. Depression is generally divided as follows; major depressive disorder, dysthymia, Bipolar disorder, Seasonal affective disorder, premenstrual dysphonic disorder and atypical depression affecting anyone at any time (Very well mind, 2018). There are many contributing factors that seem to increase the risk of developing or triggering depression. These include certain personality traits, traumatic or stressful events, a history of mental health disorders, history of depression in blood relatives, abuse of recreational drugs or alcohol, chronic illness and medication(Kalat, 2001) However, this does not factor in the environmental factors such as poverty with the affects it has on an individual’s well-being. Genetic assessment There are strong biological links with those who sufferer with depression, in terms of genes family research- especially twin and adoption studies shows a genetic link were Individuals may inherit pre-dispositions to depression or other mood disorders( kalat, 2001). Wender et al (1986) conducted family correlational research into depression through adoption study which observed whether genetics or the environment appeared to be more associated with depression in adopted adults would suffered depression. Psychiatric evaluations were conducted and the study produced results showing that the biological parents of the adopted adults were eight times more likely to have the disorder than the adopted parents. Twin studies are an additional way of studying if genetic factors are the cause of the pre-dispositioned disorder. Monozygotic twins (MZ) share 100% of their genes whereas dizygotic twins (DZ) only share 50%, of the   rate is the process for assessing the likelihood of one twin having the disorder in which the other also has to have the same. A significant note that need to be considered, is in previous research it wasn’t possible to differentiate between the MZ and DZ twins so statistics may also be incorrect.   Diverse studies have produced fluctuating statistics but the overall trend pattern was usually the same concluding MZ twins indicated increased rates in depression in contrast to DZ twins. From these studies environmental factors cannot be ruled out, MZ twins share comparable environment’s than DZ twins so influences such as friends and education are more likely to be similar on both. Even in MZ twins being raised apart their environments may not be that diverse. Despite the thousands of studies carried out to locate the gene, studies have failed to identify locus of any significant gene specific to depression (http://www.psychology4a.com/depression.html, no date). It is however possible for people with no family history to also develop depression. A British team of scientists has recently located a gene that seems to be predominant in multiple family members suffering with depression, chromosome 3p25-26 was situated in more than 800 families with recurring depression. This study looked at DNA from over 800 families including 971 sibling pairs who had European origin and who were affected by recurring depression. It also included 118 pairs of siblings with one affected by depression and the other not.   Other studies were conducted at the same time as the British researchers which matched the link between the same chromosome and depression. (Heath line, 2016) However the results could not be applied to those suffering with less serve depression. This evidence also lacks ecological validity as it cannot be generalised to the whole population and only represents the European. Research has also shown that individuals with parents suffering with depression are 3 time more likely to have the disorder.   Scientists now have confidence in that as many as 40% of individuals suffering with depression can be linked back to genetics.   (Health line, 2016) Biomedical Assessment The biological aspect of depression looks for indications that relate to diagnostic categories of mental disorders with an outlook that a sick body can be restored to health (McLeod, 2014). This theory links depression to imbalances or problems in the brain regarding the neurotransmitters, serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Evidence of the imbalances is very difficult to monitor and measure in a person brain. The neurotransmitter serotonin involves the regulation of important physiological (body orientated) functions such as sleep, aggression, mood and sexual behaviours. Research suggests that the decrease in the production of serotonin by the neurons can cause depression in some people but not all. Catecholamine hypothesis was a popular explanation in the 1960s to why people developed depression, suggesting that a deficiency of norepinephrine in certain areas of the brain was responsible for creating depressed moods. (Mental help net, 2007) Autopsy studies support this theory a s it shows that individuals who experienced multiple depressive episodes had less norepinephrine neuron than individuals with no history of depression. Conversely, the research outcomes also revealed that not all people who experienced mood change was the reaction to the norepinephrine levels being lower. Modern studies also suggest that decreased levels of serotonin triggers a drop in norepinephrine levels leading to depression.(Harvard medical school,2009)With this explanation or approach anti psychotics have long been established as a fairly cheap, effective and speedy treatment at reducing symptoms for the individual. However, it could be argued that the side effects and addiction caused by these types of medication is a weakness of this approach. Although this approach created psychological treatments for many mental disorders it has neglected the treatment process. Scientists have been testing the chemical imbalance theory validity for over 40 years (approximately) and regardl ess of thousands of studies been conducted there’s still not one direct supporting evidence proving the theory accurate (Psychology Today, 2017). Psychological assessment The psychological perspective on depression explores unconscious thinking, possible past traumas and focuses on aiding the individual to realise their potential and emphasis on social support and psychological interventions. Freud was the first to offer an explanation on depression. This theory delivers evidence based explanations for how people think, behave and feel the way they do (http://www.psychology4a.com/depression.html, no date).   The psychodynamic approach regards the source of mental disorder being the cause of loss or rejection by a parent (McLeod 2015). Although, this does not take in to account current experiences/problems that the individual may be going through. Supporting evidence of this was Bifulco et al (1992) studies found that children who lose their mother are more likely to suffer with depression (http://www.psychology4a.com/depression.html, no date). The cognitive- behavioural model has a strong emphasis on reinforcements (positive or negative) as an explanation for depression. Beck’s (1976) hypothesised that individuals with negative thoughts towards themselves or those who have low self-esteem are far more susceptible to suffer from depression, suggesting that the negative perception that they held towards themselves was built up through negative experiences. Beck anticipated that experiences in childhood could lead to a cognitive traid resulting in the individual suffering with depression. This traid is built up in three parts in which people hold negative thoughts; the self, the world and the future. In addition those who suffer with depression or are susceptible to it magnify the bad experiences and minimise the good (Eysenck, 2012). Weissman and Beck (1978) as cited in Dobson (2010) supported this theory by using self-schemas to discover out how people perceived themselves and the world around them. The results showed that those people with negative self-schemas were far more likely to suffer with depression. Although, White (1985) agrees that there was enough evidence to suggest that Beck’s theory was correct although, he suggests it does not show the true connection of depression and failed to identify that logical errors might be triggered by biological factors such as chemical imbalance in the brain. Becks theory was based upon questionnaires, although there are limitations to this form of information gathering. This questions the reliability of the research as the participants of the questionnaire can be effected by social desirability (McLeod, 2015) Ferster (1973) behavioural theory suggests that it’s a lack of positive reinforcements is the cause of depression. For instance a loss of a loved one may cause depression due to the loss of a positive reinforcement. Lewinsohn (1976) suggested that when others give the depressed individual attention this reinforces the depressive behaviour and symptoms. This can also have the reverse effect when there’s a lack of attention given by family or friends and thus lack of reinforcements, this can equally exacerbate depressive symptoms. This raises the debate to whether depression causes negative thinking and perceptions or that the negative perceptions were the cause of depression. Abreu and Santos (2008, p.131) Sociological explanation The sociological explanation for mental health such as depression regards social forces as the most important determinants of mental disorders, taking a broader view of a psychiatric disorder than any other model. Regarding an individual’s environment and behaviour as being fundamentally linked. In some perspective it’s similar to the psychodynamic model which also sees individuals moulded by external events. However, whereas the psychodynamic model views depression as highly personalised and determinants are not immediately recognisable. This model views depression based on general theories of groups and caused by observable environmental factors such as poverty, poor neighbour hoods, low education, ethnicity, divorce and the loss of a loved one WHO (2014). Although short term sadness is a normal response to these triggers and should not be confused for depression. People who live in poverty struggle causing them to be in a continuous stressful state, feeling overwhelmed and inadequate of taking control over their own lives. Health Ross (2000) as cited in Cockerham, (2008) linked better quality neighbourhoods with those of a poor disadvantaged neighbourhoods, the   findings were higher levels of depression occur in the latter with individuals suffering psychologically due to their environment (although there were also links to their individualism). The daily stressors of living in these deprived areas with low income, unemployment etc. are linked to the symptoms of depression (Haralambos and Holborn, 2008). Individual’s living in clean and safe environments displayed lower levels of depression further supporting that social factors contribute. Individuals living in poverty become the strongest predictor of depression WHO (2004) Consideration must also be given to the possibility that individuals living in communities   with increased employment opportunities are still being diagnosed with depression as a result of losing their jobs through suffering with depression rather than not having a job and becoming depressed. This raises to the question is depression the cause of the environmental factors or is the environmental factors the cause of depression. In conclusion, there doesn’t seem substantial evidence in any one area to state that there is a single source of depression. Evidence points towards genetics playing 40% role in cause of depression, especially in cases of family studies. However, it is suggested that instead of being a direct cause of it makes a person more prone to getting depression than others.   The behavioural and cognitive theories have reputable aspects of validity to such that you can apply findings to real life situations and cases of depression. However it does have a weakness with both approaches being that either do not consider or recognise the biological or genetic effects of depression. The research has established that mental illness is complex and depression is no exclusion, therefore it cannot have a singular, unpretentious explanation and is a result of a combination of biological, psychological and social factors. Evaluation of the available research would suggest that although genetics may have an impact on depression there is more sound evidence to suggest other factors heavily contribute. Evaluation    The introduction of this essay specified clear figures regarding those suffering with depression within the UK and women being more susceptible as pose to men. However it could have given more insight to that particular causes of this issue such as evidence based studies to suggest why. The research throughout this essay was gathered by a wide variety of reliable sources and used the most up-to-date information as possible. As this essay was limited to secondary research this restricted access to research on a more personal level such a questionnaires within the community on families who suffer or have recurring depressive disorder. Due to the word count set on this essay it restricted more divulge information on other cause/ explanations for depression. For example Personality, Gender, Disabilities etc. The Researched statistics that was presented in this essay was analysed and evaluated were possible. Links to genetic theories supported the findings of certain studies which in turn strengthened the statistics enabling the essay question to be answered.   However there could have been additional analysis of genetic studies not relating to the MZ twins and DZ twin siblings. From the supporting evidence and statistics gathered within this essay the conclusion was able to answer the essay question giving a figure of 40% of depression is caused through genetics. It also acknowledges the serious mental health disorder and its complex problems and cause. Yet it was unable to single out one defining cause of depression. A more enhanced insight and knowledge was obtained by carrying out this project in the wider field of depression and its root causes. Adolescent (In)vulnerability by Marilyn Jacobs Essay

Adolescents are often viewed in a negative light that depicts them as risk-takers, irrational decision makers, and vulnerable to dangers. The validity of the above statement is proven true by the peer-reviewed journal article entitled Adolescent (In)vulnerability by Marilyn Jacobs Quadrel, Baruch Fischhoff, and Wendy Davis. The article reveals the results of three groups that were questioned on their perception of how likely they might experience different risks. The subjects included a range of individuals from different socio economic status such as middle class adults with their teenage children and high-risk adolescents receiving treatment for different diagnosis. Some of the risks included automobile accidents, unwanted pregnancies, alcoholism, being a victim of a mugging, and becoming sick from various elements such as air pollution or poison. The results show that all of the subjects feel that they would face less risk in comparison to others. See more: Basic Economic problem of Scarcity Essay The opinion of relative invulnerability was about the same for the adolescents and the adults. Boththe teenagers and their parents agree that the parents are less vulnerable to specific risks. The study reveals that there is a slight difference in the way adolescents and adults think when they are faced with making a decision. One huge problem is that adolescents may be perceived as incompetent to make a decision which could lead to their rights being revoked and wrongly diagnosing the true foundation of their risk behaviors. The study implies that one explanation for why adolescents take great risks is because they underestimate the likelihood that a negative outcome will occur to them. Although adolescents have awareness that risks are involved, they also have misunderstandings of risks associated with certain behaviors that vary due to the adolescent’s socio economic status. Overall, the study shows that there is not enough support to prove that perceived invulnerability is largely present during adolescence, but evidence is present to conclude adults steadily display invulnerability. When estimating one’s risk, the psychological process for all ages are similar and biased which leads to the result of ones belief as less vulnerable in comparison to someone else. Flaws appear in every study because of different variables such as the participants or their environment. One flaw of this study may be the aspect of time pressures created by the subjects that may differ in a real-life situation. A second imperfection of the study is pressure from peers is not accounted for and is  neglectful of social backing. This flaw is crucial because peer pressure is a huge part of teens engaging in riskier behavior. Evidence is revealed that teens are more likely to engage or partake in riskier behaviors without foreseeing the consequences when in a group or surr ounded by acquaintances. A follow up study to this one that would attempt to eradicate a major flaw would be to study both the adolescents and adults when in a group or a peer setting. The results might be different due to peer pressure and the desire to be popular or fit in. Two discussion questions that prompted from the reading of the journal article are: 1. Should the legal drinking age in the U.S. be lowered to 18? Are 18 year olds able to purchase and consume alcohol responsibly? 2. Should birth control be available to teenagers without parental consent? Would access to birth control prevent or lower the rate of unwanted teen pregnancies? I believe that this study presents many important aspects of the similarities and differences between adolescents and adults when it comes to making a decision and being perceived as vulnerable to a risk. I agree that individuals have a misconstrued awareness of one’s vulnerability to risks in comparison to friends, family members and strangers. Based on person al experience, I believe I was more inclined to be impulsive and irrational as an adolescent compared to my current age.

The Bank War Waged by President Andrew Jackson

The Bank War was a long and bitter struggle waged by President Andrew Jackson in the 1830s against the Second Bank of the United States, a federal institution that Jackson sought to destroy. Jacksons stubborn skepticism about banks escalated into a highly personal battle between the president of the country and the president of the bank, Nicholas Biddle. The conflict over the bank became an issue in the presidential election of 1832, in which Jackson defeated Henry Clay. Following his reelection, Jackson sought to destroy the bank and engaged in controversial tactics which included firing treasury secretaries opposed to his grudge against the bank.  The Bank War created conflicts that resonated for years, and the heated controversy Jackson created came at a very bad time for the country. Economic problems which reverberated through the economy eventually led to major depression in the Panic of 1837 (which occurred during the term of Jacksons successor, Martin Van Buren). Jacksons campaign against the Second Bank ultimately crippled the institution. The Second Bank of the U.S. The Second Bank was chartered in April 1816, in part to manage debts the federal government had taken on during the War of 1812. The bank filled a void left when the Bank of the United States, created by Alexander Hamilton, did not have its 20-year charter renewed by Congress in 1811. Various scandals and controversies plagued the Second Bank in the first years of its existence, and it was blamed for helping to cause the Panic of 1819, a major economic crisis. By the time Jackson became president in 1829, the problems of the bank had been rectified. The institution was headed by bank president Biddle, who exercised considerable influence over the financial affairs of the nation. Jackson and Biddle clashed repeatedly, and cartoons of the time depicted them in a boxing match, with Biddle cheered on by city dwellers, while frontiersmen rooted for Jackson. Controversy Over Renewing the Charter By most standards, the Second Bank was doing a good job of stabilizing the nations banking system. But Jackson viewed it with resentment, considering it a tool of an economic elite in the East that took unfair advantage of farmers and working people. The charter for the Second Bank of the United States would expire, and thus be up for renewal, in 1836. However, four years earlier, Clay, a prominent senator, pushed forward a bill that would renew the banks charter. The 1832 charter renewal bill was a calculated political move. If Jackson signed it into law, it might alienate voters in the West and South, jeopardizing Jacksons bid for a second term. If he vetoed the bill, the controversy might alienate voters in the Northeast. Jackson vetoed the renewal of the charter of the Second Bank of the U.S. in dramatic fashion. He issued a lengthy statement on July 10, 1832, providing the reasoning behind his veto. Along with his arguments claiming the bank was unconstitutional, Jackson unleashed some blistering attacks, including this comment near the end of his statement: Many of our rich men have not been content with equal protection and equal benefits, but have besought us to make them richer by act of Congress. Clay ran against Jackson in the election of 1832. Although Jacksons veto of the banks charter was an election issue, he was reelected by a wide margin. Continued Attacks on the Bank Jacksons war with the bank placed him in bitter conflict with the Biddle, who was as determined as Jackson. The two men sparred, sparking a series of economic problems for the country. At the beginning of his second term, believing he had a mandate from the American people, Jackson instructed his treasury secretary to remove assets from the Second Bank and transfer them to state banks, which became known as pet banks. In 1836, his last year in office, Jackson issued a presidential order known as the Specie Circular, which required that purchases of federal lands (such as lands being sold in the West) be paid for in cash (which was known as species). The Specie Circular was Jacksons last major move in the bank war, and it succeeded in virtually ruining the credit system of the Second Bank. The clashes between Jackson and Biddle likely contributed to the Panic of 1837, a major economic crisis that impacted the U.S. and doomed the presidency of Jacksons successor, President Van Buren. Disruptions caused by the economic crisis resonated for years, so Jacksons suspicion of banks and banking had an effect that outlived his presidency.
